Obituary for Aune "Aili" Innanen (Heino)

Aune "Aili"  Innanen (Heino)
Aune Aili Innanen, 90, of Tillsonburg, Ontario, passed away peacefully at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Courtland on Sunday, November 20, 2011. She was born to the late John and Katri Heino on June 23, 1921 in Pottageville, Ontario. Aili attended Central Commerce Collegiate Institute in Toronto where she excelled academically and athletically winning her high school letter in 1936. She was an outstanding sprinter and won numerous track and field medals in Toronto and area track meets and was a member of the Toronto Supremes Track Club. At the age of 15, Aili competed in the Olympic Trials in Montreal attempting to qualify for the 1936 Olympics. Aili moved to Wainfleet and graduated from Port Colbourne High School in 1937. While in Dunnville and working at the Imperial Bank of Commerce she met and married Leo Innanen on June 14, 1947 and they lived together in Tillsonburg and then in Delmer before Leo passed away on January 22, 1996. Aili was an active member of the Delmer United Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the United Church Women. She also was a member of the Tillsonburg Seniors Choir. Aili is survived by her four children: Joyce (Al) Edmonds of Chatham; Larry (Trish) of Oakville; Leroy (Kip) of London and Garry (Judi) of Toronto and nine grandchildren: Mike (Summer) Innanen of Toronto, Cheryl Edmonds of Cambridge, Meridith (Kevin) Kidd of Toronto, Jordan Innanen of London, Susan Edmonds of Milton, David Innanen of Toronto, Dana Innanen of London, Alexandra Innanen of Toronto and Katrina Innanen of Toronto. She is predeceased by her husband, Leo and her granddaughter, Pamela Innanen. Aili was one of the most charitable people in the world and made regular donations to numerous charitable organizations during her lifetime. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Delmer United Church, the Tillsonburg Seniors Choir, the Nature Conservancy of Canada or the charity of your choice. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Danny Dockx and each member of the wonderful and compassionate staff at Caressant Care in Courtland for their professional care and commitment to the quality of Aili’s life with them there. She and we felt truly blessed. Friends and relatives will be received at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Thursday, November 24, 2011 from 12 noon until the time of service which will be at 2 p.m. Interment to follow in Delmer Cemetery.
