Obituary for Elmer Arthur Quintyn

Elmer Arthur Quintyn
Dr. Elmer A. Quintyn July 22, 1923 to July 6, 2013
Just days from his 90th birthday our dearly loved Elmer Quintyn passed with grace from this life. By his side every step through 67 years of marriage his best friend and true companion Alene (Scotty) will forever cherish the memory of this pioneering man who lived life to the fullest and gave so much to his community.
An accomplished surgeon who received his MD from the University of Western Ontario in 1951, all the while leading the charge for the Western Mustangs football team, Elmer returned to his roots and the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital to serve for more than 30 years. Early on he presided as the hospitals only surgeon and for many years as Chief of Staff. The hospital flourished and matured under Dr. Quintyn’s reign and thousands were touched by his skill and commitment to medicine.
Active in his community Elmer was honored as the inaugural recipient of the George Tillson Memorial Founder Award which recognizes the foresight and vision of community founders. He served as President of the Kinsmen Club, Shrine Club and the Curling Club; Director of the Royal Order of Jesters; Vice Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, and member of the Hospital Board for 23 years serving as Chair from 1967 to 1969. Elmer also served for six years as a member of Municipal Council
Elmer was incredibly proud and devoted to his family; son Douglas and wife Linda Quintyn, daughter Janet Reid, son Chuck and wife Michelle Quintyn and his grandchildren Chris (Bonnie), Kari (Allan Friesen), Jason, Justin (Lacy), Jeffery (Brenda), Kathryne Scotty and Carly Jac; and his great grandchildren Beau, Ryan, Alivia and Evi.
Elmer will be remembered as a man who lived big. He was an adventurer who had his pilot license, and was adept at flying, scuba diving, golfing, hunting, boating, fishing and photography. Although an only child he had many wonderful friends both at home and in Florida.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2013 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Ostrander’s Funeral Home Ltd., 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg. The Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.
Donations to the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital will be appreciated. Sincere appreciation and thanks is due to the caring and patient hospital nursing and medical staff, and to the many people who supported Elmer’s journey these last months.
