Obituary for Betty Anne Smith (Schonberger)
Betty Smith (Schonberger)
September 2, 1946 to August 8, 2017.
She loved cats, Blue Rodeo, the Food Network and cooking for friends and family. She was a collector of tea pots, cookbooks, dolls and always had a soft spot for animals of all kinds. Betty created a very welcoming home with her husband Havens (2007) and was the proud mother of two strong and beautiful daughters Kara and Kristen. Her family was her pride and joy and she exemplified motherhood in all she did through her kindness and love. The Smith household was always a gathering place for friends and family and Betty always had fresh homemade muffins and other treats at the ready for those who considered the Smith household a second home.
Betty was the daughter of Elizabeth (1980) and John (1957) Schonberger and was a proud Hungarian who celebrated her heritage performing traditional dances and preparing Hungarian food. Betty was an elementary school teacher in Tillsonburg and was reminded of many memories of her students when she saw them around town as adults. She left teaching to work with Have at Delhi Glass, the family business. She was always a friendly face for customers and neighbours of the shop. Later in life, Betty opened a home preschool where she gained a second family in the children and families she cared for. She always had so much love, lessons and mothering to give. Her love of teaching, learning, cooking and Courtland bakery treats will be carried on lovingly by her daughters.
She shared many special memories with her family and friends, especially with her lifelong best friend Norma Roczen. She was loved and supported by both her Schonberger relatives (John & Helen, Judy & Rob, Mike) and her Smith family (Lee & Sue, Dale & Glenda, Ginny). She will be fondly remembered by many special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. At the Tillsonburg Retirement Centre, Betty was surrounded by wonderful staff and friends who brought so much happiness to her throughout her time there. The Smith family would like to acknowledge the loving and caring staff of the Tillsonburg Retirement Centre who made her feel at home.
Betty was kind, generous and always known for her beautiful smile. Even during hospital stays she maintained her beautiful smile, easy laugh and positive outlook. The Smith family is grateful for the outstanding care she received by Dr. Abdalla, Dr. Crosby, Dr. Kovacs and the nursing and support staff at both the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and St. Elizabeth Health Care. Betty was always supported by her many friends and family. She passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side at the age of 70 under the outstanding care of the staff and volunteers of Sakura House in Woodstock. Words cannot express the compassion and care that was received at Sakura House and to honour Betty’s life we ask that donations be made to Sakura House or the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. Knowing that Betty has friends and family across the country, everyone is invited to share their thoughts and memories on-line at www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com.
