Andrew “Andy” Roger Van Doninck

Andrew “Andy” Roger Van Doninck passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at the Woodstock Hospital with family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Andy immigrated to Ontario at the age of 11 aboard the Queen Mary II from his birthplace Herentals, Belgium in 1957. Andy held various welding/ millwright positions within the area. Andy was in partnership as the owner/ proprietor of the New Vienna Hotel in the 1980’s. He had constructed the building that now stands in Vienna. As an avid hockey fan, Andy volunteered in the 1980’s as trainer for the Tillsonburg Junior C’s Hockey Club. Andy enjoyed over 25 years of camping and fishing at Big Otter Marina, Port Burwell, where he appreciated the companionship of many friends. As a big fan of classic cars, Andy owned many in the last few years. As a member of the Four Aces darts team, Andy travelled with team members all over Ontario in order to participate in competitive championships and tournaments. In partnership with his close friend, George, together they had won dart tournaments and actually enjoyed a challenge versus the Canadian Darts Champions. Andy is survived by his wife Barbara Van Doninck. His children Bev Speirs and Rob Van Doninck (Nancy) and his step-daughter Jody Berkelmans (Karl). Andy is also survived by his grandchildren, Nick, Claire and Ian and his step-grandchildren, Colin (Ashley) and Matthew (Val) and great step-grand daughter Leighton. Andy was a strong presence in life and was known for his joking and teasing. He was very loyal to those close to him. Andy put up a brave fight in his battle with cancer and will be dearly missed. The family would like to thank Frank and Patricia, his care nurse, Suzanne and Dr. Zawarynski for their diligence in Andy’s care. In keeping with Andy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service due to the current conditions around the pandemic. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Research may be made by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) who have been entrusted with the arrangements.
