Obituary for Cornelia Metselaar

Cornelia (“Corrie”) METSELAAR (nee de Gelder)

Born in Boskoop Holland
on July 10, 1932

Following the recent loss of her husband, Adam (on March 7, 2022), Corrie passed away peacefully in her 90th year, on April 2, 2022, at Woodingford Lodge – Tillsonburg, with family by her side. Corrie is survived by her loving family: daughter Jane Tisdale (John Stanbridge) and son Dave (Deb (nee Adamson)). Wonderful grandmother (‘Oma’) to: Jay Tisdale (Amber), Jessa Tune (Ian), Adam Metselaar (Ashley), Andy Metselaar (Jenna) and Alexa Metselaar. Great-grandmother to: Hunter, Hannah, Liam, Toryn, Erik, and twins Aidan and Jake. Corrie will be sadly missed by her brothers Jan (Riet), Case (Krystyna) and David (Linda), sister-in-law, Stien Dirkzwager (Hil), nieces and nephews. Corrie is predeceased by her parents Cornelis and Cornelia, and brothers Peter and Leen, as well as two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
Being raised in a poor family and living in occupied Holland throughout the years of WWII were two things that shaped Corrie’s entire life. Corrie and Adam immigrated to Canada in March 1953 with $43 in their pockets and a few basic household goods; they worked hard as farm labourers and by December of that same year had saved enough money to buy a new car. Another two years of diligent saving allowed Corrie and Adam to buy a home for the princely sum of $3500, where they resided for 55 years.
In addition to her love for her family, Corrie’s passions over the years were many: travelling, baking, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, bowling, swimming, playing cards and shuffleboard, but her all-time favorites were reading, doing the daily Word Find/Jumble/Crossword puzzle page in the London Free Press, and a good game of Scrabble with a worthy opponent. We will forever miss the sight of Corrie, sitting in her easy chair by the window and her coffee mug resting on the window sill to her left, with either needlework, crossword puzzle, or novel on her lap.
A special thank you to all of the residents and staff at Woodingford Lodge (Ingersoll and Tillsonburg) who loved and cared for Corrie during her years there.
Ostrander’s Funeral Home Limited was entrusted with the cremation arrangements. A private service will occur in the spring at the graveside in the Tillsonburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Recreation Committee of Woodingford Lodge-Tillsonburg, 52 Venison Street West, Tillsonburg, ON, N4G 1V1
A limb has fallen from the family tree that says, “Grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I led while I was strong.”
