Obituary for Douglas William Kent

Douglas William Kent passed away suddenly of a heart attack on November 2, 2022, at the age of 66. He is survived by his wife, Jean Marie Oatman and their two children David George Kent and Stephanie Marie Kent, as well as his sister, Valerie Willaeys (nee Kent), brother-in-law David Willaeys, and nieces Michelle and Christine Willaeys and their families.

Doug is also survived by brothers-in-law James Oatman (Anna) and Charles Oatman (Teri Monti). Predeceased by brother-in-law Dave Oatman (Reg Delaney and step-daughter Madison Hansford), and survived by much loved nephews Aaron and Brian Oatman.

Doug grew up on his family’s farm on Airport Road, near Ostrander. He attended Springford Public School, Glendale High School, and then the University of Guelph where he earned a BA in Mathematics. He worked as a steelworker at Stelco for over 30 years before enjoying a retirement making maple syrup and traveling. Doug stayed close with his friends from high school, with everyone gathering every year for decades straight.

An avid dirt biker and motorcyclist, Doug raced off-road his whole life, all the way up to vintage races where the riders are as “vintage” as their bikes. He shared his love for the sport with his children and as an indispensable volunteer who helped organize and run events across the province, particularly the Beagle Bash Enduro in Langton.

Doug had a passion for mechanics, working on anything from brand new dirt bikes to antique tractors in his workshop. And he would always be the first to help a neighbour in need of an extra hand. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and community.

In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends and family will be received at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg, ON N4G 3T6 (519-842-5221) on Saturday November 12, 2022 for a memorial service starting at 10 a.m. with interment at Tillsonburg Cemetery after. Following the service, everyone who knew Doug is welcome at the Carriage Hall, 25 Brock Street W, Tillsonburg.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
