Obituary for Honor Carmichael

Passed away peacefully in her 102th year. Beloved wife of 73 years of G.D. (Red) Carmichael who passed away in 2016. Loving mother of Gordon (Judy), Don (Janice) and Ted (Kim). Proud grandmother of Amy (Robby Jennings), Will, Jackie, Kevin (Kayla), Robbie, Lauren, Harry, Priscilla and Andrew and great-grandmother of Frida, Agnes and Nora. She is survived by her sister, Yvonne MacKenzie.

Honor had a full and wonderful life, growing up in Pilot Mound, Manitoba as the eldest child in a Prairie family with brothers Vic and Ken and sister Yvonne. Honor was all about education for herself, for her kids and grandkids, and for her students. She graduated from business school in Winnipeg, married her wartime sweetheart Red, and built a career as an Executive Secretary at Anglo Canada while bringing up her three boys in Tillsonburg. In her mid-40s, Honor returned to school, graduating from Ontario Teachers’ College and eventually completing both a BA and an MA at University of Western Ontario. She did this while teaching commercial and business students at Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute and later becoming Head of the Business Department at Annandale High School in Tillsonburg. After their working careers ended, Honor and Red travelled widely to visit friends and spent parts of all four seasons at the family cottage in Muskoka. They lived over 70 years in Tillsonburg at the family home on Victoria Street and their retirement home on Edwin Crescent. They fiercely held on to their independence, living in their own home throughout their retirement years.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and VON Sakura House Hospice, Woodstock. Special thanks to Honor’s dedicated caregivers for all their love and help.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at the Tillsonburg Cemetery on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at which time Honor and Red will be jointly interred and their lives will be remembered and celebrated.
