Obituary for Joan Labelle (Fleming)

JOAN LABELLE (1940 – 2020)
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Joan Labelle at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on the afternoon of Sunday, May 3, 2020. We are comforted by the fact that she was in the presence of a family member at the time of her passing. Joan was a resident of Harvest Crossing Retirement Community in Tillsonburg but had recently moved to Terrace Lodge Long Term Care in Aylmer. Joan is survived by her life partner and lovingly dedicated husband Ron Labelle of Tillsonburg, two daughters Lynda (Dale) Ouellette of Tillsonburg and Wendy Lewis of London and a son, Terry (Tamra) Labelle of Oakville and five grandchildren, Corey (Nancy Funk) and Hunter Ouellette, Alex Lewis, Grace and Abby Labelle-Scott. Joan was the eldest sibling to Charlie (Phyllis) Fleming of London, Barbara Ann Wadge of London, Jean Maurice of Stratford and was predeceased by her brother Robert Fleming in 2014. Additionally, Joan is survived by a sister-in-law, Cleo Labelle of Sault Ste. Marie and was predeceased by her brother-in-law Bill Labelle in 2019. To say Nana loved her grandchildren was an understatement. She was present at the hospital in London for both Corey and Hunter’s births. Made Ron drive to Albuquerque, New Mexico so she could hold Alex within his first week. Convinced Ron to stay overnight in a Toronto hotel so they could hold Grace in her first hours after birth. Finally, she flew on her own to Calgary, Alberta to be able to hold Abby before she was two weeks old. She so loved holding babies! Health presented many challenges for Joan over the past three decades. But through it all she maintained a positive outlook and her sassy sense of humour. She was a survivor and fighter right up until these weeks before her 80th birthday which would have been followed by her 60th wedding anniversary, in July. Joan has many good friends throughout the province but far too many to list here. Our family thanks you all for your concern and support through this time. If you wish to honour Joan’s memory with a financial contribution, her charity of choice is the TDMH Dialysis Unit. Memorial donations can be made by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221). A Celebration of Joan’s life will be conducted at a later date. The health emergency prevents us from being able to schedule that event. Please take some time to reflect on your memories so that we can share them when we can gather to remember her. Friends and relatives are invited to show their support by sending special heartfelt tributes, and hugs from home in memory of Joan to www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com
