Obituary for Margaret Joyce Zavaros

Zavaros, Margaret Joyce (nee Marshall)

Passed peacefully in her sleep at Wynfield LTC Residence in Oshawa Ontario on February 12. In her final weeks Margaret enjoyed the company and love of her family with many smiles, hugs, and gatherings.

Margaret was born on August 18, 1937. She grew up in Norfolk County, the only child of Wilma (Wittet) and James Marshall and her cherished cousin Annette Leighfield was her best friend and sister in life. Margaret’s early years were spent living on a farm, which saw her develop an appreciation of the land and nature that she carried throughout her life.

Margaret became a teacher following in the footsteps of her beloved Aunt Jean Marshall. In 1960 she married Michael and began her married life in Essex Ontario raising three children, Elizabeth, Anne and Scott. Margaret was the heart and soul of the family providing an abundance of love, compassion and support that truly allowed all to grow and flourish. Margaret had many passions in life, she was an amazing cook and hostess for many family gatherings, an avid gardener, award-winning artist, and talented seamstress. Her love of books and reading lead Margaret to pursue a career as a librarian in later life where she had the opportunity to read and review books for a local newspaper. In their retired years Margaret and Michael moved back home to the rural area of Margaret’s youth and enjoyed many wonderful years in their country home. Margaret loved to go “antiquing” and was a proud member of the local LACAC working to preserve old buildings, and lands in the area. She was also a volunteer at the Lynedoch Untied Church and the Backus Mill Heritage and Conservation Centre. Margaret’s life has provided the family with so many wonderful memories and traditions that will sustain us for many years to come.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 62 years Michael, three children, Elizabeth McKay (Kevin), Anne Zavaros (Emmy) and Scott Zavaros (Lori). She took great joy in and will be dearly missed by her eight grandchildren: Sarah (Jake) and Andrea, James and Liam, Grace, Mabel, Rosie (Brennan), and Paulina.

Margaret was so appreciative of the care she received at her “home”, in Oshawa. Hilary, Hollis, Daniel, Jade, Nikki, Lisa, Debbie and the team of professionals, we cannot thank you enough for your care and compassion throughout her stay. Also a heartfelt thank you to Mariela and the team at Stonebridge Community Services for your support and care in Tillsonburg.

There will be a private graveside service in the Spring at Straffordville Cemetery. Donations in Margaret’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society and VON Canada through www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com.
