Marion Frances McCorquodale Hevenor was born and raised in Holiday, a tiny hamlet near Embro, Ontario. She loved her charmed rural life, often regaling family with tales of ice skating, haying and highland dance. Her spirit was tempered by the depression. At just 17 she went on to become a one-room schoolhouse marm near Avon where she met her future husband Donald Hevenor, and taught five of his siblings, Marie, Marion, Ivan, Aston and Carl. She left teaching to become a bookkeeper in London. Inspired by Don's pursuit of a medical career, Marion enrolled in nursing school in Hamilton, graduating in 1949. While Don interned at Hamilton General Hospital, Marion became an operating room nurse. She loved the challenge of arranging the instruments for complicated surgeries. In 1951 Marion and Don married and set up a medical practice in Port Burwell. They loved the small village life, thriving in the community, participating in church, where Marion ran Mission Band and created a couples club that sponsored a new kitchen at St. Paul's United Church. They had fun together producing and performing in community theatre. As the medical practice thrived, so their family grew with Jim, Bob, Janet and Doug arriving to complete their happy tribe.
In 1962 they moved to Tillsonburg. Marion became involved in Community service. She helped develop United Church policy at a national level. She introduced the Candy Stripe program to TDMH, was president of the United Church Women's chapter several times. She was a member in good standing of the oldest consecutively running local social organization, the Tillsonburg Ladies Travel Club, for fifty years . She played a mean game of golf into her nineties, and played bridge just as well, for over half a century. She enjoyed the friendships she found in everything she did. She once said I found my friends through service and what friends they were. They were with her through thick and thin. She and Don travelled the world with dear friends, enjoying every minute, journaling with pen and picture. She loved to write, authoring several booklets on subjects such as: St. Paul's United Stained Glass Windows, and The Histories of Churches in Oxford County. She singlehandedly began, organized and ran the archives for her beloved Tillsonburg St. Paul's United Church, only recently handing the reins over to a new curator.
She cherished her four children their children and her great grandchildren. She filled her life with the things that made her happy- her work with community, the love of her family and the arts she participated in. Marion was a quiet power house.
Marion is predeceased by husband Dr Donald Hevenor, son Dr. Robert Hevenor, parents Francis McIntosh and Mary Anne McCorquodale, siblings Dallas, William and Elizabeth. She is survived by her children James and friend Dawn, Janet Marie and Scott, Douglas and wife Brenda. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kristen Boyd (Stephen), Lauren Cook (Dan), and Jared (Addis), and great-grandchildren Isabelle, Rowan and Harvey Boyd. She will also be fondly remembered by Bob's partner Robert Tanz and family friend Dennis Cutts.
