Obituary for Mary Stephanie Verdoch (Heyrman)

MARY STEPHANIE VERDOCH (neé HEYRMAN)

August 24, 1931 – April 13, 2023

Mary Stephanie Verdoch passed away peacefully from respiratory failure in the early hours of Thursday, April 13th in Scarborough General Hospital with her daughter, Marie, by her side at the age of 91 years. She was born in Tillsonburg, but lived in Toronto from 1950.

Mary was predeceased by her grandmother, Stephanie DeSutter, her parents, Bertha and Alfons Heyrman, and her sister, Dorothy Winter (survived by husband, Joe, and sons, Mark (Angela) and Troy (Stacey)). She was the beloved wife of WWII navy veteran, the late Victor Verdoch and loving mother to Marie and Tim (Susan). Mary was also the proud grandmother of Randy, Ryan (Jen), and Aaron (Peter) and delighted great grandmother to Liam, Owen, Emma and Harlow.

As a first generation Canadian and oldest child, Mary bore significant caregiving and tobacco farming responsibilities from an early age. Her commitment, work ethic, independence, resourcefulness and resilience carried through to successfully raising her own family throughout difficult times. Mary was also the mainstay in providing care and support to her in-laws throughout their lives. She was a proud public servant in the Ontario Ministry of Health, OHIP until her retirement in 1993. Mary will be remembered for her many kindnesses, love of adventure (she often said that she would have liked to have been a pilot), oil painting, crocheting, knitting, mystery novels/movies, and the Toronto Maple Leafs – a source of friendly family conflict with cousin Mary Ann, a Habs supporter.

A special thank you to the staff in the Emergency Department and on the 4th Floor of Crockford Block, Scarborough General Hospital for their gentle care and compassion for Mary during her final days under extremely difficult working conditions.

Mary was much-loved and will be missed by her family, friends and neighbours. In the end, her wish to go home to Tillsonburg has been fulfilled.

A Visitation will be held for Mary at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519) 842-5221 on Monday April 24, 2023 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday April 25th, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Tillsonburg. Burial will follow at the Tillsonburg Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Toronto.

If desired, donations to a charity of your choice, in memory of Mary, would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com.
