MARCH 4, 1942 – MARCH 1, 2021

On March 1, 2021, peacefully with his daughters by his side, Mathew Adam Schafer of Straffordville, Ontario passed away at VON-Sakura House, Woodstock at the age of 78 years, only a few days shy of his 79th birthday. Mathew is survived by his daughters Katherine (Jeff) Vansevenant, and Christine (Derek) Barnard, and his cherished grandchildren Michaela Vansevenant, Kamden Vansevenant, Kaden Vansevenant, K.C. Barnard, Morgan Barnard, Amber Ferguson, and great grandson Joel Ferguson. Mathew is predeceased by his wife Anna Marie (nee Emerson), and his sons, Michael Schafer and Mathew Schafer. Mathew was a Past Reeve of Bayham Township, a Past Warden of Elgin County, and a Past Deputy Mayor of Bayham Township. He was a member and Past Treasurer of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Vienna, a member of Vienna Lodge # 237, Vienna, Ontario, a Tillsonburg Shriner, and a member of the Vienna Museum Board. Mathew was known for his kind and pleasant demeanor, and for having a generous disposition. Even during his long fought battle with cancer, all care providers consistently commented on his sweet and amicable personality, and his ever willingness to accomodate. Mathew will always be remembered for his passion and keen interest in classic cars and his devotion to his community, and family. A Private Funeral Service will be held in Ostrander’s Chapel on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 1:00 pm and will be live streamed through the link provided by our website. Interment will be held at the Straffordville Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, VON-Sakura House, Woodstock or the Charity of your choice would be appreciated by the Schafer family.
