April 12, 1946 – October 11, 2019
Roger Donald Shoemaker, age 73, passed away peacefully at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Friday, October 11, 2019. Roger was predeceased by his parents Donald and Stella Margaret (Holdenmeyer). Roger is survived by his daughters Cheryl (Travis) Schmidt and Carrie Streets. He is also survived by his grandchildren Troy, Dylan (Shania), Ryan, Dawson and Payton. Roger was a man of simple tastes, a dedicated father and grandfather, a successful business man and a dear friend. He cherished time spent and memories made with those closest to him. Roger had many friends and neighbours who he spoke very highly of and we know he would want to thank everyone for their phone calls, visits, cards and support during this most difficult time. Roger was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Tillsonburg. We would to thank Father Pirt and Deacon Jack for their visits when he truly needed to feel God’s presence. We would also like to thank the entire team at TDMH who treated our dad with compassion and provided comfort and care. As Roger requested, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. A private Celebration of Life will occur at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roger’s name to a charity of your choice by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) who have been entrusted with the arrangements.

After reading Matt Scholtz high school recollections of Roger, I thought I would also share thoughts of that time. We were all teenagers in the early 60's and one of the things many of us did then was roller skate. Depending on our curfews, we might skate only one or two nights or if we were lucky, maybe three or four. With all that practice we were really quite good. Roger was one of the best. Those were great times. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your Dad and Grandfather.

It was a total shock for me to learn that Roger, a classmate of mine at St. Jerome's High School in Kitchener, passed away in the Tillsonburg hospital. I live in Tillsonburg, only two blocks away from the hospital, and I was completely unaware that he lived in the same town that I did. Had I known, I would have loved to have had a coffee with him and talk about our years at St. Jerome's. Roger was always fun in class, but his signature was his waterfall hair cut. I believe he came to St. Jerome's from Sacred Heart grade school. When our class held a reunion in 2006 at St. Jerome's, just after the school was turned over to Wilfred Laurier University, he was missed because we were unable to locate him. Before typing this, I flipped open my 1965 school yearbook, to find Roger, smiling as always. Time flies, but the memories linger. Matt Scholtz, Tillsonburg, Ontario

We will miss Roger’s sense of humour. He always had something clever to say, and watched our kids grow up from his porch chair. It was nice having him as our neighbour and friend. Collin, Heather, Carter & Avery
