VALERIE HORNYAK
1932-2020
Peacefully, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 5, 2020, Valerie (Pastor) Hornyak, of Delhi and formerly of Courtland passed away at the age of 87 years. Beloved wife of 56 years of the Late Michael “Mike” Hornyak (2016). Loving mother of Brenda (Larry) of Springford, Wendy of Tillsonburg and Kathie (Matt) of Toronto. Proud grandma of Stephanie (Matthew), Christopher (Jessica), Timothy (Larissa), Jonathan, Gabriel and Josiah and great-grandmother of Naphtali, Eliana, Zebulon, Evelyn and Isabelle. Predeceased by her parents John and Mary (Fenyk) Pastor, brother John Pastor, sister Eva Marlatt and brother-in-law Bill Marlatt. Born November 22nd, 1932, Valerie grew up on a tobacco farm. When she was 27, matchmakers arranged a date with a Michael Hornyak. They married within six months. She moved to her new home on a new tobacco farm and worked side-by-side with her husband for the next 25 years. After selling the farm, Valerie went back to school at 53, earned her GED, then, having always wanted to be nurse, she became certified as a Health Care Aide. She went on to work for a variety of elder care facilities, then for the Red Cross as a caregiver for a number of elderly clients who lived at home. In her spare time, she was an Adult Literacy volunteer. She and her husband spent many hours volunteering at church functions. For 25 years she volunteered at her beloved Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. When she wasn't busy with her many interests, she could be found reading mystery novels, solving word puzzles, or playing euchre or cribbage with family and friends. However, her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Friends and relatives will be received at Ostrander’s Funeral Home Limited, 43 Bidwell Street Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Friday, July 10, 2020 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, public visitation will be LIMITED to ONLY guests that sign up for a specific time to attend. Time slots will be made available on our website or by calling 519-842-5221. Guests are asked to not attend if they are ill, have been around anyone that is ill or have travelled. Guests are required to wear masks and maintain social distancing rules. Guests are encouraged to only attend when their time slot begins. If guests arrive too early, they are asked to wait in their vehicle. If guests arrive late, they will not be permitted to enter.A Service for Valerie will be held at a later date with inurnment at the Courtland United Church Cemetery.
