Jay passed away peacefully in his 93rd year on October 17th, 2020 at VON-Sakura House, Woodstock. Predeceased by his loving wife and best friend Mary Hetherington (July 5th, 2020). Proud father to Jerry (Darlene) Hetherington, Wanda Van Rybroeck (Jim), Frank Hetherington, and Rose Couse, predeceased by son-in –law Alan Couse. Much loved grandfather to Lori, Jacquie (Steve), Jeff (Katie), Nadine, Chris, David (Lauren) and Gerad (Cassy). Cherished great-grandfather to Cassy, Zach (Keyanna), Lily, Jaime, Jack, Braxton, Brody, Bree and Jacob, and extremely proud great great grandfather to the newest member of his family Mila Evelyn Rose.
Jay was born in Glen Meyer and predeceased by his parents Gordon and Gladys (nee Axford)
Predeceased by his brother Lee and sister-in-law Donna and by his sisters and brothers-in-law Verna (Don) Graydon, June (Jim) Lowe, and Jean (Jerry) Waechter. Also predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law Freda (Roy) Graves, Grace (Carl) Grant, and Daisy (Floyd) Roberts.
Jay is survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Larry Schroeder. Jay was uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Jay worked hard over the years, initially on the family tobacco farm, then, after moving to Tillsonburg, he worked for Jackson’s bakery for many years until they closed, then he worked at Harvey’s Precast, then Pearce’s Automotive, and worked for Van Rybroeck Aluminum, until he retired. He continued to drive vehicles for Pearce’s after he retired. He volunteered with St. John’s and was on the Boy Scout Camp Committee. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and visiting with his family. Playing golf with family and friends was his passion, getting a hole in one, sealed his bragging rights.
Due to the on-going Covid Crisis, there will be a private family graveside service with Rev. Lynne Allin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any of the following: The Canadian Diabetes Association or VON-Sakura House, Woodstock, and may be made by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell St., Tillsonburg, ON N4G 3T6, (519) 842-5221, whom have been entrusted with arrangements.
