After a lengthy battle with illness, the family wishes to announce the passing of Michel Richard Coombes, “Mike”, of Tillsonburg, formerly of Guelph and Toronto, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Friday, February 21, 2020, at the age of 76 years. Beloved husband and best friend of Susan (nee Darrell). Proud and loving father of Tim, Andrew (Emily), and Peter Coombes. Mike was a great addition to the Tillsonburg Pioneers. We all enjoyed his uplifting attitude, and humour. Mike enjoyed playing Frederick Sharpe the wealthy butcher from England. His costume was most excellent, complete with cleaver. Although he was not particularly good at following his script the audiences always enjoyed him. It was a privilage , honour and a lot of fun to know him!

Dear Susan and family
We were so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. It was always such a pleasure to work along side Mike at the Tillsonburg Kiwani's Club meetings and functions. We remember our last short meeting and conversations with Mike at the Tillsonburg Horticulture Christmas gathering. He truly was a pleasure to know. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. Treasure the many memories each of you have. Rest in Peace Mike

We were sorry to hear of Mike’s passing & our thoughts are with Susan & all the family. I got to know Mike very well through our careers with TD Bank. I ran the Milton Badminton Club for several years & a group of us played at his club when he lived in Guelph. Many fond memories, often over a beer & often watching a soccer game. Mike was a Gentleman & friend who will be missed. Cheers Mike! Our thoughts are with you, Terry & Donna

Mike was my second cousin and in his childhood, his family lived in Kent whilst mine lived in Hampshire, not a great distance, perhaps up to 10 miles but when we were young, almost an epic journey. Hence in our childhood, we only saw each other infrequently. I saw more of Mike, and his lovely wife Susan, following his move to Canada, meeting up with them when they visited the UK, either where we live or in the Lake District. One memory is from the Lake District, sitting at the top of hill eating our picnic lunch in the pouring rain.
When I remarried, I casually mentioned to Mike and Susan that they would be welcome to join us at the ceremony in a Cornish coastal fort converted to include 10 bedrooms, which we had hired for 5 days. To our surprise, they announced the were coming and we were delighted they came and also surprised my mother, Elizabeth, who took half a minute to realise that the strangers she was chatting to were in fact her relations who had even stayed with her on one of the holiday visits.
With two friends, we took a four week holiday, predominantly in Canada but also visiting the USA, in 2017, meeting up with Mike and Susan in the Niagara area. I had mentioned to Mike our plans and suggested as our itinerary did not take us near Tillsonburg, we met up at the Post House Hotel in Niagara-on-the -Lake if they could be in the area. What a coincidence, Mike said that was the hotel where they stayed during their honeymoon, so I suggested they also stayed and renewed their vows! Mike and Susan stayed two nights and we had a lovely day-and-half with them. Lovely memories and a favourite photo attached.
Mike was a lovely man, a great sense of humour and someone I think anyone who met him would feel warm in his presence. We shall miss him and his Christmas letters. Hopefully we can maintain contact with Susan and share our family progress and experiences.
