Obituary

VALERIE HORNYAK
1932-2020
Peacefully, at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 5, 2020, Valerie (Pastor) Hornyak, of Delhi and formerly of Courtland passed away at the age of 87 years. Beloved wife of 56 years of the Late Michael “Mike” Hornyak (2016). Loving mother of Brenda (Larry) of Springford, Wendy of Tillsonburg and Kathie (Matt) of Toronto. Proud grandma of Stephanie (Matthew), Christopher (Jessica), Timothy (Larissa), Jonathan, Gabriel and Josiah and great-grandmother of Naphtali, Eliana, Zebulon, Evelyn and Isabelle. Predeceased by her parents John and Mary (Fenyk) Pastor, brother John Pastor, sister Eva Marlatt and brother-in-law Bill Marlatt. Born November 22nd, 1932, Valerie grew up on a tobacco farm. When she was 27, matchmakers arranged a date with a Michael Hornyak. They married within six months. She moved to her new home on a new tobacco farm and worked side-by-side with her husband for the next 25 years. After selling the farm, Valerie went back to school at 53, earned her GED, then, having always wanted to be nurse, she became certified as a Health Care Aide. She went on to work for a variety of elder care facilities, then for the Red Cross as a caregiver for a number of elderly clients who lived at home. In her spare time, she was an Adult Literacy volunteer. She and her husband spent many hours volunteering at church functions. For 25 years she volunteered at her beloved Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. When she wasn't busy with her many interests, she could be found reading mystery novels, solving word puzzles, or playing euchre or cribbage with family and friends. However, her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. So sorry to hear of your loss. I have many fond memories of your mom over the years. While working in tobacco she would bring us treats at coffee time . Also I worked with her doing church chores . She would always have a hug for me when we met.I know she was always proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed.
